The Healing Power of Animals
by Michelle Kicherer of www.BananaPitch.com
Never underestimate the healing power of animals. Most people have experienced love and coziness from an animal at some point in their life. For some people, it has been many years since they have had a pet around. Some senior homes do not allow resident animals, or sometimes it is not feasible for seniors to own pets.
Animal companionship has been proven to reduce blood pressure, stress and anxiety. Owning a pet- or helping care for one- gives seniors a sense of purpose and belonging, which increases feelings of positivity and has a great impact on overall quality of life. Another very positive outcome of having an animal around is to increase the amount seniors receive physical affection. We often forget how important physical touch is: touch releases a chemical in the brain called dopamine, which increases positive feelings. It also reduces the release of the hormone cortisol, which is a damaging stress hormone. If you are a senior care provider, consider having a resident pet or two, or having parents’ or residents’ children, friends or volunteers bring in a dog or other friendly pet. Try setting these pet visits up on a regular basis, and watch as your residents moods improve and the energy change. What a fun and easy way to bring love and happiness into our seniors lives! You will truly see the healing power of animals.
