Caregiving Age Trends
Have you heard the latest caregiving age trends? While caregivers are found across the age span, the average age of caregiver is 48.0 years. About 51% of caregivers are between the ages of 18 and 49, and of those caring for someone aged 50+, the average age of caregivers is between 50-64 according to the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP.
The number of hours dedicated to caregiving increases with the age of the caregiver based on a Johns Hopkins University study. Many caregivers of older people are themselves growing older. Of those caring for someone aged 65+, the average age is 63 years with one third of these caregivers in fair to poor health.
In terms of caregiving age trends, currently more than half of care receivers (56%) are under age 75, and almost one-third (28%) are under 50 years old. In addition, caregivers of adults are now older, on average, than were their counterparts in 2004. Their average age now 49.2 years, compared to 46.4 in 2004.
