An ad airing recently during morning television news is publicizing a California state program that provides specialized free phones for seniors and those with special needs. California Phones provides adaptive phones and communication technology to individuals who meet the criteria. One device is provided free of charge to those who qualify. The equipment connects to a home’s regular phone lines. While regular phone service charges continue, the device itself is free.
There are a variety of phones offered that make it easier to hear, see, and dial, depending on one’s needs:
- For those with hearing difficulties, there are phones with high levels of amplification that are hearing-aid compatible. A variety of TTY machines are also available. Accessories that can connect to standard telephones are also available. These include amplifiers, extra-loud phone ringers, vibrating pagers, lights that flash to announce an incoming call, and even “bed shakers” to alert when the phone is ringing .
- For those with compromised vision there are phones with extra large buttons for dialing, and even a foot-dialing accessory with enlarged photos on button pads
- For help with mobility challenges, there are remote-controlled speaker-phones that can be activated by either a tap, sensor pad, or switch.
- There are devices to help those with memory challenges. Phones with programmable photo buttons alleviate the need to remember and dial specific numbers.
Easy Eligibility:
Eligibility for this program is quite simple. California residents who have pre-existing phone service, and a medical provider’s approval for need. There are no age or income requirements. A range of professionals can verify a senior’s medical need for an adaptive device, including doctors, licensed physician assistants, audiologists, optometrists, and speech-language pathologists.
