While the cause can’t be proven scientifically, many people experience flares of arthritis pain during rainy weather. There is a theory that the change in barometric pressure may be responsible. Whatever the cause, joint aches, stiffness, and pain are common complaints experienced by many seniors when the weather changes to rain.
Many arthritis patients are prescribed anti-inflammatory medications for their symptoms, and may also take supplements. But there are some non-medical strategies that can increase comfort and ease alleviate the intensity of pain and stiffness, especially on those rainy days.
Warmth can help relax muscles and alleviate joint pain, so taking a hot shower or bath often provides relief. Heating pads or electric blankets can also feel soothing. Keeping one’s home warm and toasty can be beneficial. Dressing in layers helps to keep the body warm, as does warming clothes for a few minutes in the dryer before dressing.
Gentle exercise can help to minimize the discomfort of joint stiffness, so doing some stretching, especially in the mornings before our joints are “warmed up for the day”, can help get our bodies off to a good start. Keeping the body moving throughout the day will keep stiffness in check. When it’s rainy and we tend to stay indoors, having a light exercise program or stretching routine to rely on can help with both physical comfort and keeping busy. Light massage of painful joints by a caregiver can also be effective in reducing pain and stiffness.
Mindfulness and meditation can help keep our moods clear from feelings of anxiety or depression, and having a positive and relaxed mindset helps with pain management, too. Distraction from physical discomfort can be very effective, so having enjoyable indoor activities to engage in is essential. Especially during long rainy seasons, having adequate lighting at home can be a mood booster. Playing favorite music and enjoying warm drinks, soups, or casseroles can bring comfort when confined indoors.
