New Travel Laws: What You Need to Know to be Prepared

January 21, 2019

New Travel LawsDo you have plans to travel in the future?

New travels laws regarding identification will soon be implemented. Being aware of these new identification requirements imposed by the federal government is helpful so you can travel with ease. These new changes could be seen as an inconvenience, but with a little extra time, you can be in compliance.

Real ID Act

Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005 as a result of the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations regarding homeland security. The act comes with a set of federal standards aimed at eliminating airline terrorism by exacting more control over the documents granting access to domestic planes.

The Real ID Act practices begin October 1st 2020. Every domestic air traveler will need to present a Real ID driver’s license, a Real ID identification card, or a passport to board a domestic flight. Until the Real ID Act goes into action you can continue to use your state-issued driver’s license. It is recommended to upgrade to the new card as soon as possible. Applications are currently being accepted, and the lines will only get longer at the DMV as the deadline approaches.

Types of Identification Cards

Two types of identification cards are being issued. The first is a Real ID Driver License/ID Card. This type of identification requires a visit to a DMV location. Once there, you will need to present original (not photocopied) documentation proving your identity, social security number, and residency. There is an application fee of $35 for the driver’s license.  With this new card you will be able to board a domestic flight.

The second type of identification card is a Federal Non-Compliant Driver License/ID Card. You can renew this card online or by mail, without having to go to a DMV location. The application fee for this card is $30. However, with this type of identification card, you cannot use it to board a domestic flight beginning October 1, 2020. Another form of identification, like a valid US Passport, will need to accompany this card.

These new travel laws may not immediately affect you, but could be a problem if you have any travel plans in the future. As we all know, it’s always better to be prepared when getting through airport security.

For more information on these new travel laws,  State of California Department of Motor Vehicles has detailed information on their website.
