Nothing says summer like the delightful butterflies flitting from one flower to the next…but then in the evening we have those ever annoying mosquitos, and of course, ticks found in those beautiful mountains. These summertime insects we call “bugs” can be more than just pesky – they can spread illnesses. So be cautious – to keep those bugs at bay!
Tips:
1) Stay indoors from dusk to dawn when those mosquitoes bite. Be on guard for those daytime ones as well.
2) Remove standing water around your home – that is where the mosquitoes breed.
3) Check screens on windows – are they fitting tight or do they have holes that need to be patched or repaired?
4) Wear long sleeves and tuck your pants into your shoes when hiking or walking in the woods.
5) Shower after a trail ride or picnic in the park – thoroughly check your skin and hair for ticks.
6) Use a repellent with 20-30% DEET to repel ticks as well as mosquitoes.
7) Check your pets for ticks too – they can carry them into the house or may become infected themselves.
8) Wear clothing treated with permethrin to help keeps bugs away when camping.
If you are caring for someone who loves to be outdoors in the summer, be sure they are protected as well. Some individuals have luck with “dryer sheets” and “citronella candles” as bug deterrents.
If you have been bitten by mosquitoes or find a tick, watch for signs of a more serious illness. If you have sudden headaches, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, rash or fatigue, see your doctor or go to a nearby emergency room (especially if you are on vacation).
