I had the opportunity to work with a family who sent me some documents to review before I met with them to discuss options. I realized the true value in having the experienced professional as your guide and coach – it is the “questions we ask” so all of us can proceed to the next step of what is possible to bring about the highest quality of life for the person of concern.
When I reviewed the history, the prior diagnosis, the current medication and the client’s ability to function, it was clear we needed better answers about personality changes, motor functions and the medications being given that didn’t match the current diagnosis. I also had to ask questions about finances in order to help the family with a plan of care and then determine what types of options would be available to this client – based on need, values and resources.
This particular client needs referrals to 3 specific specialists for consultation and testing. Once the family and I have those results, we will be able to bring about a better quality of life for everyone.
Asking good questions based on experience, education and knowledge of community resources is the value we bring to individuals and their families. Not only is quality of life improved but time, stress and maybe resources are saved knowing what needs to be asked and where the professionals are that can assist with the answers.
