What are the best foods for a strong immune system? As the weather cools down and cold and flu season approaches, I have to remind myself of all of the important things to do to keep myself and my loved ones healthy. One of the most important things we can do to keep our immune systems strong is to eat the right things.
Below are my top five foods to eat, on a regular basis, to help keep the immune system strong. And for those elderly folks who have a hard time eating solid foods, you can blend these items and serve as a thickened smoothie.
Top of the list:
Water. Water is one of the absolute best foods for a strong immune system. Keeping hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for your body. And really, the easiest. Have a hard time remembering? Get a 16 oz re-usable water bottle and remember to fill it at least 4 times a day. Set a timer, or drink one glass when you wake, one at lunch, one late afternoon and one after dinner.
Dark blue or purple berries: blueberries, acai berries and especially elderberries! Their high dark skin-to-fruit ratio means every bite is packed with antioxidants. Some studies suggest they even have a chemical that blocks the flu virus.
Spinach: amongst other things (iron, fiber, vitamin C), this leafy green is full of folate, which helps generate new cells thus helping keep our immune systems strong. Spinach is one of the best foods to eat for a strong immune system.
Button mushrooms: they contain high amounts of niacin & riboflavin (both important B vitamins) which both boost the immune system which helps prevent illness. They’re also high in selenium-a mineral that may also help prevent flu.
Oysters! These shellfish are really high in zinc, a metal that the body needs small amounts of to help maintain a healthy immune system. Zinc helps fight off colds, heals skin and repairs cells. Not a fan of seafood? Meat, dairy, nuts legumes and whole grains also contain zinc.
