Thanksgiving Dementia: Story Time
by Michelle Kicherer of www.BananaPitch.com
Having dementia is incredibly frustrating, confusing and scary. Even during the holidays, when those with dementia are surrounded by their loved ones, memories are hard to maintain, thoughts float away and conversations are hard to follow. At Thanksgiving, you may be wondering how to help a family member with dementia.
A very nice way to spend a portion of Thanksgiving is by having a Story Time with seniors suffering from dementia. Whether at the table, or while you’re waiting for food to be ready (or after you’ve eaten and you’re stuffed), sit with your loved one and share stories.
Depending on their stage of dementia, they might be able to tell you stories. I recommend putting on music from their youth, which can help trigger memories and emotions. Thanksgiving can be a wonderful time to reminisce.
Ask prompting questions. Sometimes stories might trail off, but keep them going! If details aren’t clear, or names aren’t given… no big deal. It’s stimulating and pleasurable to recount days of yore. Focus on stories about light-hearted and pleasurable times. Did they have a favorite pet growing up? Was there a particular Thanksgiving Day fiasco that turned out to be hilarious (Dog ate the turkey? Football through the window?).
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!
